Adam Saperstein and Havelock Payne are victims of time. Growing up as overachievers, they are propelled by upwardly mobile parents into the prestigious halls of Beaton Lowell college, where they encounter the politically correct hell of 1980s campus life.
There, along with their friends, the brilliant Claus Fuerst and the equally brilliant Dede, they are formed and molded by the tutelage of the leftist and revolutionary-minded Professor Giovanni Corigliano, and his introduction to documentary film-making class.
As Claus and Dede gravitated towards one another, pulled as much by the superiority of their minds as any sexual attraction, Havelock is left struggling with unreciprocated love and Adam just struggles with being white and privileged.
Ultimately though, Claus and Dede’s relationship is doomed to failure. It is Dede’s rampant success as a filmmaker that is the last straw for Claus, who is struggling in his career, and sends him teetering towards a fatal decision. His reaction to his perceived failure will affect them all and send Adam and Havelock on a journey to Peru a full decade later, to discover what really happened to their erstwhile, talented friend.
